Maternity Care in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, Uganda

Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement is one of the largest refugee communities in Uganda, providing refuge to people fleeing conflict and instability in South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Women and children make up the vast majority of the population, many of whom have endured significant hardship, displacement, and trauma before arriving at the settlement.

Maternal Health Challenges

Maternal health remains a major concern within the settlement. Many expectant mothers face challenges including poor nutrition, limited access to healthcare services, overcrowded living conditions, poverty, and the lasting effects of trauma and displacement. These factors can increase risks during pregnancy and childbirth and affect the health and wellbeing of both mothers and their newborn babies.

Key Facts About Kiryandongo
  • Approximately 90% of the refugee population consists of women and children.
  • The settlement's population has grown rapidly due to ongoing conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan.
  • One health clinic reports approximately 90 babies being born each week.
  • Low contraceptive use remains a significant factor contributing to high birth rates.
  • The average total fertility rate (TFR) is estimated at 4–6 children per woman.
  • Access to family planning services exists but is often underutilized due to cultural barriers, limited awareness, and misinformation.
  • In one study, more than half of the refugee women interviewed were unaware that maternal healthcare is a legal right.

How As Humanity Is Making a Difference. Despite these challenges, humanitarian organizations, healthcare workers, community leaders, and generous supporters around the world are helping to improve the lives of refugee families in Kiryandongo. Through medical care, maternal health education, nutrition programs, clean water initiatives, and livelihood support, thousands of vulnerable women and children receive critical assistance every day.

As Humanity, we are proud to play a part in this effort by supporting new and expectant mothers through the distribution of Maternity KITS. These kits contain essential items needed for childbirth and newborn care, helping mothers prepare for the arrival of their babies with dignity and confidence. By providing basic necessities such as baby clothing, blankets, hygiene products, and other essential supplies, we help reduce stress during this important stage of motherhood and contribute to healthier outcomes for both mother and child.

Together, through compassion, partnership, and humanitarian action, we can help refugee families build safer, healthier, and more hopeful futures.
